European mobility week 2025: Mobility for all

From September 16 to 22, thousands of European cities will join the annual campaign European Mobility Week, which reminds us that transport is not only about moving from point A to point B. It is about quality of life, health, and accessibility for everyone.

This year’s theme, Mobility for all, emphasizes the need for a fair and sustainable transport system - one that is safe, affordable, and accessible regardless of age, income, ability, or place of residence.

Why is mobility for all important?

Not everyone has the same opportunities to move around. Some struggle with high fares, others with missing transport connections or barriers in public space. This problem has a name: transport poverty. And this year’s campaign aims to tackle it.

European Mobility Week 2025 therefore calls on us to reshape cities as well as rural areas so that no one is left behind and everyone can get where they need to go easily.

Imagine, instead, a city where parking lots are replaced by green spaces, traffic jams by safe cycle lanes, and where you can move comfortably on foot, by bike, or by public transport. Such a city is healthier, safer, and more pleasant to live in.

Inspiration from urban planners: cities for people, not cars

Urban planners such as Jan Gehl or Gil Peñalosa show that cities can be welcoming for everyone:

  • Gehl emphasizes the importance of space for pedestrians and cyclists - not only for cleaner air but also for better physical and mental health of residents.
  • Peñalosa reminds us that cities should be accessible to children, seniors, and people with disabilities - groups that are often overlooked.

Their ideas resonate with the vision of European Mobility Week: cities are not just transport infrastructure, but living spaces for people.

Combine and ride - how about mixing public transport and carsharing?

Shared mobility and carsharing: the path to a sustainable city

Transport is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. The solution lies in supporting sustainable mobility such as walking, cycling, public transport, and shared mobility.

Did you know that one shared car replaces up to 15 privately owned ones? If we add bikesharing or public transport to that, cities gain more space for parks and people, not cars.

Mobility as a service (MAAS)

An increasingly important concept is “mobility as a service” (MAAS). With it, you can combine tram, bus, shared bike, or carsharing in a single app (for example, PID Lítačka in Prague).

The result? Fewer cars on the roads, cleaner air, and more freedom of movement.

Which is more expensive? Owning a car with up to 14,000 km per year, or borrowing one when you actually need it?

How to join the European mobility week 2025?

European Mobility Week is not just for cities, everyone can take part:

  • Try Car Free Day and discover the city from a new perspective.
  • Choose to travel on foot, by bike, or with a shared car.
  • Join local events that support sustainable transport.

In 2024, more than 3,500 cities from 45 countries participated, and the number keeps growing.

The future of car-free cities

The 2025 theme, Mobility for all, reminds us that cities should be fair and shared spaces.
If we prioritize sustainable modes of transport and shared services, the future holds healthier, greener, and more livable cities.

Let’s reflect more often on how much space car infrastructure takes from our cities and how it could be used differently - for everyone.

Try carsharing with Autonapul

Carsharing is a simple way to take part in sustainable mobility. For those who don’t use a car daily and prefer other transport options, it doesn’t have to mean giving up cars completely. Thanks to carsharing, a car is always within reach when it’s really needed, and you can even choose from different types of vehicles.
Reserve your selected car within minutes via the app, drive without worries, and support a city with more space for people than for cars. As a bonus, you avoid the hassles of car ownership.

Look at cars and parking zones in your city.
